OnYourMarks.ai is built to save you time on marking – not to replace your judgement, and not to store or make use of your students’ work. We want to be transparent about how we work so that you can be confident in our service. This page sets out, in plain English, how we handle data, how we keep a teacher/lecturer in charge of every mark, and our approach to fairness and accuracy.

• We don’t keep the essays, assignments or marking documents you upload to OnYourMarks.ai systems. Once your marked result is returned to your browser, it isn’t retained on our servers — the data is transient.
• To generate marking suggestions, your upload is sent to OpenAI, the AI provider we use. OpenAI keeps abuse-monitoring logs of API usage — which can include the content sent to it — for up to 30 days, then deletes them, unless the law requires them to be kept for longer. This is the only point in the process where your upload is held anywhere outside your own browser, and only briefly.
• No OnYourMarks.ai staff EVER sees a document you upload.
• We NEVER store student names or the filenames of the work you upload. This data is transient. That information isn’t something we collect or need.
• Because we don’t build up a bank of marked student work on our own systems, and OpenAI’s own logs are time-limited rather than a permanent archive, there’s no growing database of student writing sitting behind OnYourMarks.ai to be breached or misused.
• Account and billing details needed to run your subscription – your name, email and payment information – are handled separately from the work you upload. We use Stripe to process payments; Stripe retains this data in line with its own data retention policy, which you can read in full at stripe.com/support data retention policy. OnYourMarks.ai holds your account details for as long as your subscription is active, as set out in our Privacy Policy.
• OnYourMarks.ai’ own systems are hosted and process data in Manchester UK.
• OnYourMarks.ai needs an internet connection to process your upload and return results. See our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy for the full technical and legal detail on how that works.
• We estimate that OnYourMarks.ai is around 90% accurate. That figure depends heavily on the quality and clarity of the marking instructions you provide – clearer criteria in means a more reliable mark out.
• We want our marking to be as impartial and fair as possible, and we take that into account in how the system is built and tested. No AI system can be guaranteed entirely free of bias – which is exactly why a teacher reviewing every result, rather than the AI acting alone, matters.
• AI is still an emerging technology. Occasionally it won’t confidently mark a response – when that happens, it’s flagged rather than guessed at, and this is an area we expect to keep improving.
OnYourMarks.ai has been developed with reference to the Department for Education’s guidance for the education sector – Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education, and Generative AI: product safety standards (last updated January 2026) – which set out expectations for keeping a teacher in charge of decisions, and for AI tools used in schools and colleges to be transparent about what they do and don’t do.
We’re a new company, and we see meeting this guidance as an ongoing responsibility rather than a box we’ve ticked once. We’ll keep this page updated as our own practices – and the wider guidance – continue to develop.
